I've been hard pressed to find a way to watch avi files without converting them and this is the answer. DVDs from the UK, MP3's off my jump drive, even AVI files from a cd. Definitely worth the money. I bought this thing as a gift for my mother, and now I'm thinking of buying one for myself. The thing played everything I put into it.

Sturdy little work horse, budget friendly and region free make it a solid buy - but be prepared to wait. Still, the region free for a price you have to love plus the fact it does do the job for less than the price of a nice dinner out on town the town makes it hard to complain. I've owned this for over a year and it is a tough little machine that gets the job done but it is sloooooww. Opening the tray, turning on (yawn), turning off (I"m asleep before it is).I've never had a slower machine.
I was immediately unsatisfied because of how slow to respond this unit is after you turn it on. But you have to wait 7 seconds for it to even turn on.
Believe it or not, this is a huge annoyance. Doesn't sound like long.--well imagine pushing the power button and counting to 7 before you can hit the eject button because it won't respond to anything.
This is my first review. It does look nice.
Especially weird since the unit looks so hi-tech and nice. and it's for an item I bought a year ago.
After a year of regret I'm finally writing my review to express this.
Apparently I was dreaming to think I could 1080 at such a low price. Now that one is just a "PHILIPS" advertisement.There was no reason it would overheat as there was at least a foot of open space in every direction. So, no more of that. It seems that a lot of other reviewers are having some luck with it but have to wonder if they still are. Followed the instructions on Philip's website to reset it. I have 2 of these bought at the same time.
I tried the upscaling once and the picture became very notchy, as if the upscaling process overworked the hardware. The meltdown came from within and I'm not going to risk moving the other 5960 to take its place. One still works, but I've yet to try it with HDMI and/or upscaling on that one. Had to leave it unplugged for 4 hours before it would play its final DVD. It's a shame to see this Sony DVD impotently entombed in its Philip's coffin.If you pull the trigger on this, I hope you have better luck than I did with it. The other worked for a few days using HDMI into Samsung 52" LCD TV.
I guess that 30 seconds of upscaling blew some transistors or something because the next day it would only boot to the "PHILIPS" LCD.
